West Michigan Valentine’s Day Destinations
In just a few weeks many will celebrate the day set aside for lovers, that is Valentine’s Day. Following are suggestions for romance in the West Michigan area.
This year Valentine’s Day falls on a Saturday making it very convenient to celebrate the holiday by getting away for the weekend. If looking for a place to go, West Michigan is a great destination. It is just a few hours drive from both Detroit and Chicago, and offers something for every visitor.
Romantic Hotels/Lodging in West Michigan
Whether one prefers four star accommodations or a cozy bed and breakfast, there are many options for lodging in West Michigan.
Luxury/Four Star Hotels – Lodging at a four star hotel is a wonderful way to spend the weekend. Downtown Grand Rapids is home to two beautiful four star hotels; the Amway Grand Hotel and the J.W. Marriott. Rates at these hotels during Valentine’s weekend start at about $150 per night (for a standard room).
Lodging on or near Michigan Lakes – No matter the season, a beautiful lake is a great addition to any romantic evening. West Michigan offers several hotels on or near a lake. One West Michigan favorite is the Wickwood Inn in Saugatuck (about 30 minutes southwest of Grand Rapids). Rated by Zagat as one of the Top Fifty Small Resorts, Inns and Spas in the United States, Wickwood is a perfect choice for a romantic Valentine’s night. Although the inn presently still has rooms available, reservations should be made as soon as possible as the inn books up rather quickly almost any weekend. Room rates are somewhat pricey ($235-315 per night for Valentine’s weekend); nonetheless, rates include a guest reception with lavish hor d’oevres, a champagne brunch each morning and complimentary chocolates.
Cozy Bed and Breakfasts – If looking for something unique, consider one of West Michigan’s many bed and breakfasts. The Cocoa Cottage in Whitehall (about an hour north of Grand Rapids) offers the ultimate in romance. The inn is offering a Valentine’s Package which includes roses, chocolates and champagne. Rates for the weekend begin at $475.
Romantic Restaurants in West Michigan
Plan for a nice romantic dinner on Valentine’s night. Some places to consider include:
- The 1913 Room, a very elegant/upscale restaurant at the Amway Grand.
- Six.One.Six (named for the Grand Rapids area code), at the J.W. Marriott.
- The BOB in downtown Grand Rapids (a great place for both dinner and dancing).
- The Sardine Room in Muskegon (named Sardine Room because it is tiny) is a very intimate and cozy place to dine.
- Pietro’s Italian Restaurant in Grand Rapids offers a warm environment and very tasty cuisine.
Valentine’s Day Activities in West Michigan
Spend the weekend in the room, or enjoy a few romantic activities. Ice skate hand and hand at Rosa Parks Circle in Grand Rapids, ride the carousel at the Grand Rapids Public Museum or go for a walk through Frederick Meijer Garden.
