Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad

Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad – Flint, Michigan

Come back to the 1800′s and visit the small town that was built on the edge of Mott Lake.  Well, actually the buildings were moved here from different locations to make up the village of Crossroads.  There are 35 buildings in the community that offer you the opportunity to see what life was like in the 1800′s.

There is the Master Cider Mill that is certainly a place where everyone wants to visit, to take the time to see how cider is made.  There is a barbershop where the locals gather for a game of checkers and to catch up on the latest talk around town.  The opera house has musicians warming up for their performance and a lady gathering flowers from her garden.  The sawmill cranks out the planks used for building and the Atlas Mill turning wheat into flour beneath the big grinding stones.

Mom takes the time to teach her daughter how to crochet and of course there are the wonderful hand made quilts to be admired.  While all this is going on the train comes into town, blowing it whistle to let everyone know that it has arrived and is ready to pick up its passengers for the next trip on the Huckleberry Railroad.

The Huckleberry Railroad will take you on a 35 minute ride through the scenic woods and meadows while going alongside the Mott Lake.  The train wasn’t named after Huckleberry Finn it was named because it moved so slowly that a person could jump off the train, pick huckleberries and jump back on and continue the trip.

There are so many things to do and see in the village and around that you will need to come and see them all to fully understand how wonderful it is.

The history of the railroad began in 1857 as part of the Flint Pere Marquette Railroad Company.  In the years that followed the Pere Marquette was absorbed by the C&O (Chesapeake and Ohio) Railroad and then the C&O merged with other lines and eventually became the Chessie System which is now the CSX.

There are now 7 locomotives owned by the Huckleberry Railroad, tow cabooses, one hopper car, and motor car (Speeder).
